A history since 1353

The Schlichtegroll family combines scientific, artistic, and historical influences spanning centuries. The family chronicle is connected not only to German history but also to significant cultural developments in Europe.

The family tree looks back on an impressive history dating back to 1353. Originally documented as “Schlichtkrull,” the name evolved over the centuries into its current form.

A prominent member of this family was Friedrich von Schlichtegroll (1765–1822), a respected philologist, archaeologist, and numismatist. He was the first biographer of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. His grave is in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich, and a street in the Englschalking district is named after him.

The connection between Friedrich von Schlichtegroll and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is also noteworthy. In a letter dated January 31, 1812, Goethe personally addressed Schlichtegroll and discussed philosophical views, particularly those related to Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi.

The Schlichtkrull and Schlichtegroll families share common ancestors. Ottilie von Schlichtegroll, née von Schlichtkrull, illustrates this connection. Such familial ties underscore the family’s deep-rooted history and influence in various regions.
